My artwork expresses
my thoughts about separation between perception and reality.
I attempt to show the contrast between how individuals view themselves
and how others see them. The majority of my works are paintings
and sculptures. Aesthetic beauty is important in all my work.
I paint with thin glazes of oil to produce a rich and luminous
quality. This technique allows me to create strong contrasting
colors and values, and it lets me control the viewer’s gaze
by forcing a particular focal point. Compositionally, I paint
subjects that contain tension-a figure’s gaze will be directed
to the side of the canvas, or the subject will be pressed into
a small section of the painting. This reinforces the narrative
quality of the pieces by producing a beginning and an ending,
which is a framework for controlling the image. I strive to create
work that is dynamic and relatable; filled with tension and movement;
and enhanced by a high level of craftsmanship.
